UBC Tech Career Fair: Spreading the Open Source Love
How are your giant Jenga skills? Can you catch a ping-pong ball in a cup? Do your thumbs still pwn the GameCube enough to fireball your opponent off the Super Smash Bros. stage? What—UBC didn’t tell you the mastery of these skills would be the launch of your career? For shame. In preparation for this year’s "UBC Tech Career Fair":https://www.cs.ubc.ca/industry/techcareerfair in January, ImageX hosted a "Pub Night":http://www.facebook.com/events/309837932466022/?ref=22. We anticipated the fair being busy with booths representing companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon, leaving limited time to meet and interact with top talent from the UBC Computer Science program. We partnered with "Mahony & Sons":http://www.mahonyandsons.com/ on campus and booked up half the bar for two hours. The event allowed us to interact with students in a casual, fun, relationship-based atmosphere, ImageX style. We hoped a night of games and fun would make approaching the ImageX booth on fair day as easy as hanging out with friends. At Mahony & Sons students had a go at each of the three game stations before getting a free drink ticket. Catching a ball in a cup, maneuvering giant Jenga pieces and dusting off a game console of days past proved to be a blast. Attendees got a taste for ImageX culture: approachable, community-focused and upbeat. Brett and Gabrielle, our HR team, manned the booth on fair day, keeping an eye out for potential interns, coops and team members. It was a highlight when Pub Night attendees stopped by our booth to reminisce about the evening and check out our display. Our mission on fair day was to spread the Open Source Love and encourage students to learn Drupal. Not sure how? Try downloading Drupal from "Drupal.org":http://drupal.org/ and create a sandbox to play with and test. It’s a great way to learn the terms and basics of how Drupal works. If you're more of a visual learner, try these Drupal resources: "lynda.com":http://www.lynda.com/ "drupalize.me":http://drupalize.me/ "buildamodule.com":http://buildamodule.com/ And if reading is your thing—check out "Drupal for Dummies":http://www.amazon.com/Drupal-Dummies-Computer-Tech/dp/1118083482. UBC and its volunteers were well-organized and the fair had an incredible turn out. Watch for ImageX and our crazy ice-breaker antics next year!
