Downtown Eastside Women's Centre Case Study
Overview
The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre (DEWC) is a nonprofit based in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, operating a low-barrier drop-in centre and emergency shelter for vulnerable women. More than 600 women access our services daily, which include basic needs such as hot meals, clothing and toiletries, as well as support services like advocacy, housing outreach, and skills development.
What They Needed
ImageX first approached DEWC offering specific pro bono services as a way to contribute to the work being done in our community. We worked with the organization to make further improvements to the website, targeting optimizing communication design, SEO and searchability, visual design, and resolving many technical issues that affected user experience.
Goals for the project varied according to the client’s priorities which included technical fixes, improving user experience, as well as educating and equipping DEWC to improve their online presence as a whole.
How We Helped
The project started with a conversation to connect with DEWC to listen to their needs as an organization, especially limitations in addressing technical issues, whether it be funding, capacity, or otherwise. We asked them to talk about their goals or "wishlist" items. Some of the objectives completed included making their donation page mobile-friendly, reviewing and cleaning up plugins, fixing website redirects, ensuring information and content are organized and easily accessible, and conducting Google Analytics training. We also troubleshooted user journeys for contacting the appropriate people at the organization, minimizing irrelevant and duplicate communication. As well, we made information on making financial donations and in-kind donations more accessible, again streamlining communication to a more manageable level.
