Core Drupal 9 Modules To Improve Editorial Efficiency

We are living in a time when the right approach to technology can boost the efficiency of our everyday tasks. The work of content editors using Drupal as the CMS for their website is no exception. Drupal offers so many tools that help editorial teams work faster and achieve better results. This relieves them from tedious work and frees up more time for creative ideas.

Our Lead Developers have reviewed the Drupal 9 modules available to help your team achieve editorial efficiency. Some of those shared are used directly by website editors every day and others improve editorial efficiency behind the scenes after a few touches of configuration from developers.

This article covers Drupal 9 core modules available out-of-the-box. Check out our second post "Best contributed Drupal 9 modules to improve editorial efficiency" for the top contributed modules that can be added to your website.

Key Drupal 9 core modules for content editors

Making Drupal easier for day-to-day users like content editors and marketers is something that Drupal’s creator Dries Buyaert said he was passionate about. This dream is coming true — the Drupal core today is a real treasure for editorial teams.

However, not all Drupal websites are equally editor-friendly. When did you last have your website updated or upgraded? That’s the key question. Most of the Drupal modules that improve editorial efficiency have been new arrivals at different stages of Drupal 8 development and now continue to improve in Drupal 9.

This means that the older the website, the fewer core tools are available to the editorial team. You can ask our support experts to update/upgrade your website, and in the meantime let’s take a look at the helpful Drupal 9 core modules that improve the efficiency of editorial tasks.

Media and Media Library

The Media kit in the Drupal core allows editorial teams to save media into a user-friendly library, quickly find them, and add them to content in a few clicks. The Media Library button can be added directly to the CKEditor panel for an even better editorial efficiency. Thanks to Media, Drupal websites get five media types out-of-the-box — Image, Audio, Document, Video, and Remote Video (the oEmbed feature from Vimeo and YouTube). Developers can also add media fields to content types to create the desired structure that editors will be using.

Layout Builder

The Layout Builder module enables editors to quickly create page layouts using the drag-and-drop interface. LB is a step forward to the visual editing approach allowing editors to immediately see how the blocks will look on the front end. Drupal UX has never been so intuitive before! Layouts can be created for single nodes, for entire content types, or even for specific view modes. Editors create layout sections with a defined number and proportion of columns. Next, they drag-and-drop blocks to the layout from the list, which includes all Drupal elements such as content fields, views, contact forms, and so on. With the Layout Builder enabled for specific content types, its interface replaces the traditional “Manage Display” interface. Still, all the field settings are available to editors via the Layout Builder.

Content Moderation and Workflows

Efficient content moderation processes are vital for many editorial teams, especially large ones. For this purpose, the Drupal 9 core has the Workflows module that provides the standard functionality for all kinds of workflows and the Content Moderation module responsible specifically for content workflows. It’s the Content Moderation that provides three content states (Draft, Published, and Archived) out-of-the-box, with the possibility to set up custom states so your editorial team gets exactly what they need. The content transitions from state to state and all the team members collaborate more efficiently on content approval and publishing.

Workspaces

The Drupal core also has the experimental Workspaces module that provides the editorial teams on content-heavy websites with a possibility to switch between the “Stage” and “Live” environments. Developers can set up additional custom environments based on the editorial team’s needs. The key idea of these workspaces is to enable editors to work on tons of content and then publish it to live with one click of a button on the Drupal admin dashboard.

Quick Edit

Of course, every editor using Drupal 8 or Drupal 9 has noticed the little pencil next to content blocks. It is available directly on the website so they do not have to go to the admin dashboard when they need to edit something. This is how the small Drupal Quick Edit module greatly improves editorial efficiency.
