World Wide Web Day: The Birth of the Web, And How Drupal Supports its Values
If you’re reading this article online, you’ve already experienced the impact of one of history’s most influential inventions. Chances are you’ve also visited several websites today to check the news, compare products, or fill out an online form.
Behind every simple click is a network that dissolved the barriers between isolated documents. It replaced rigid file systems with an open web of connected hyperlinks, creating a shared universe of information. That single leap is the World Wide Web, and every year on August 1, World Wide Web Day celebrates the moment it all became possible.
While one of our earlier articles explored the acronyms powering Drupal websites, they all stem from “WWW,” which is by far the most essential. Let’s take a closer look at how the World Wide Web was born, how it evolved, and how Drupal carries its founding principles forward.
The making of the World Wide Web
A simple idea that changed everything
While working at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee noticed that researchers used different computers, operating systems, and databases. Valuable information existed everywhere, but connecting it was surprisingly difficult. Scientists would spend two years at CERN, build a crucial piece of software or document a critical experiment, and then return to their home universities.
Tim’s solution was elegantly simple. Instead of treating every document as an isolated file, why not let documents point to one another? These digital connections became known as hyperlinks, or clickable references that instantly take you from one page to another.
Tim Berners-Lee handed his boss at CERN, Mike Sendall, a proposal with a dry, uninspiring title: “Information Management: A Proposal.” Sendall read through the pages of diagrams and dense technical jargon. At the top of the cover page, he scribbled three words that would go on to change human history: “Vague, but exciting…” He permitted Berners-Lee to build a small prototype on the side. That “vague” side project became the World Wide Web.
Instead of staying in isolated collections, the information became part of a connected web of knowledge that anyone could explore simply by following links. This concept inspired the name World Wide Web.
The Internet came first
It must be noted that by the late 1980s, the Internet already existed as a global network connecting computers across universities and research labs. Cables, routers, and data protocols were in place, allowing systems to exchange raw data, run bulletin boards, and send email.
However, making that data easily discoverable across different systems was still a massive hurdle. Before the Web, using the Internet was like wandering a massive library with no card catalog or shelf labels. The information was all there, but retrieving a single file required knowing its exact server location, local file path, and specific protocol just to open it.
The three building blocks of the Web
To turn his idea into reality, Tim Berners-Lee designed a lightweight system that could run on top of any computer connected to the Internet. For this purpose, he developed three simple and elegant technologies that continue to power websites today:
- HTML (HyperText Markup Language) gives web pages their structure, organizing text into headings, paragraphs, lists, images, tables, and links. It’s the universal formatting language that allowed scientists to write plain-text documents that any computer screen could display, regardless of its operating system.
- HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) defines how web browsers communicate with web servers to request and receive pages. It allowed one computer to say to another, “Hey, please send me that specific file,” and allowed the second computer to send it back.
- URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) provide every page with its own unique address, making it possible to visit, bookmark, and share content anywhere in the world. Just like a physical office has a street address, every document on the network was given a unique “web address” so it could be found directly.
The true magic, however, was the Hyperlink, or the simple <a> tag. By embedding a clickable link directly inside a sentence, a document stored on a server in Geneva could instantly point a reader to a related dataset sitting on a computer in California.
How the first website went live
When the world’s first website went live in December 1990 on Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer, it looked nothing like today’s websites. It was entirely text-based, containing headings, paragraphs, and hyperlinks, with no images, videos, animations, or modern page layouts. Its purpose was to simply explain what the World Wide Web was, how it worked, and how others could create websites of their own.
Initially, the website was available within CERN. On August 6, 1991, Berners-Lee introduced the project to the wider Internet by posting about it on the alt.hypertext Usenet newsgroup, inviting others to explore and contribute to the growing Web.
The $0 decision that saved the Web
Had CERN or Berners-Lee decided to patent the Web, the digital world would look radically different today. Instead of an open global network, we might have ended up with competing, fee-based networks run by corporate gatekeepers.
On April 30, 1993, CERN made a monumental announcement: it placed the World Wide Web source code into the public domain, completely royalty-free.
This single decision eliminated barriers to entry. Without licensing fees or corporate permissions, developers, businesses, and universities around the globe could freely build servers and sites. Within two years, the number of web servers exploded from roughly 50 to over 23,000, setting off the modern digital revolution.
“The decision to make the Web an open system was necessary for it to be universal. You can’t propose that something be a universal space and at the same time keep control of it,” said Tim Berners-Lee in an interview.
The Web’s evolution
The World Wide Web grew at an extraordinary pace. Today, websites support nearly every aspect of modern life, from shopping and banking to healthcare, education, entertainment, travel, and government services.
Businesses use websites to reach customers around the globe. Universities publish research and online courses. Nonprofits raise awareness and accept donations. Public institutions provide digital services that save people countless hours of paperwork.
Let’s take a look at a brief timeline:
- Mid-to-late 1990s. Following CERN’s open-source release, static websites became the standard for businesses.
- The 2000s. Content Management Systems (CMSs) democratize publishing. The Web shifts from static, hard-coded pages to dynamic, user-editable platforms.
- The 2010s. The rise of smartphones changes how people browse the Web. Mobile-first and responsive design become mandatory.
- The early 2020s. Digital accessibility and strict data privacy standards take center stage, demanding inclusive, legally compliant experiences for all users.
- Today. Modern websites are integrated hubs that connect with CRMs, analytics, and AI to deliver personalized content seamlessly across web, apps, and other digital channels.
The Open Web: Shared values with the Drupal community
Drupal, a leading open-source digital experience platform, shares the foundational principles on which the World Wide Web was built. To emphasize this commitment, Drupal’s founder, Dries Buytaert, shared the Drupal Open Web Manifesto. It’s a pledge to keep the digital world open, fair, accessible, and decentralized.
Buytaert colorfully framed this mission during his DrupalCon Lille 2023 keynote, presenting a fairy tale set in “Drupal Village.” In the story, the village faced growing challenges: Site Builders were overwhelmed by technical complexity, and dark clouds hung over the land, representing the rise of the “closed web,” characterized by proprietary vendor lock-in, proprietary software/platforms, centralized walled gardens, and data misuse/exploitation.
Restless and troubled by these threats, Drupal, as the main character, was visited in the quiet of the night by a fairy godfather: Sir Tim Berners-Lee. The Web’s inventor offered a powerful reminder:
“Do not abandon your mission, Drupal! Remember, you are a Champion of the Open Web!”
Inspired by Berners-Lee’s message, Drupal released their Open Web Manifesto. The document builds on a promise that Drupal will always be anchored in these values:
- freedom
- decentralization
- inclusion
- participation
- empowerment
“It comes from the belief that everyone should be able to have a presence on the Web. And it comes from the belief that you don’t need permission to learn, build, or advance the Web. That everyone in the world, regardless of their identity, ability, wealth, or status, can have a home on the Open Web,” said Dries Buytaert.
Your website: The heart of your digital presence
For many people, a website is the very first interaction they have with an organization. Before making a phone call, visiting an office, or speaking with a member of your team, they’re likely to search online.
Within seconds, they’ll begin forming an impression. Can they quickly understand what you do? Is the information up to date? Can they easily find contact details, opening hours, products, services, or upcoming events? If the answers aren’t there, they’ll often continue their search elsewhere.
1. Total ownership and stability
Social media platforms, directories, and third-party networks are great for building reach, but they come with a major catch: you are “building on rented land.” Algorithms change without notice, features disappear, and your audience is constantly distracted by the next post in their feed.
Your website is the only digital space you completely control. There are no sudden algorithm shifts suppressing your updates, no unexpected policy changes locking your account, and no competitor ads popping up next to your messaging. It is your permanent address on the Web.
2. A single source of truth
Users might discover you through a podcast, a search engine, or a social post, but they eventually look for confirmation that you are authentic and reliable. Your website serves as a single source of truth for who you are, what you do, and how people can engage with you.
A clear, well-structured website validates your credibility instantly. It is where official announcements live, accurate contact information resides, and your true story is told without character limits.
3. Built around your goals, not a platform's
Social networks are designed to keep users scrolling on their apps. Your website is designed specifically to guide visitors toward your goals (filling out a contact form, making a purchase, booking a consultation, or reading your research).
4. Integration hub for modern work
A modern website connects directly to your internal tools (your CRM, customer support, email systems, and scheduling platforms), automating routine tasks so your team can focus on actual work.
5. Open 24/7
Unlike a physical office, your website doesn’t close at the end of the business day. It can welcome visitors from different time zones, answer common questions, accept registrations, showcase your work, publish the latest news, and help people complete tasks whenever it's convenient for them.
Final thoughts
Over three decades later, the World Wide Web remains the world’s most powerful open ecosystem. But we need to remember that its strength depends on what we build within it. For every organization, a website is its true home in the digital world, a space you own, define, and grow. By choosing open-source platforms, accessible standards, and the values of the Open Web, we keep this space worth visiting, exploring, and building together, preserving its original spirit for everyone.
